From a population total of 4,227,746, the labor force is 1.559 million (2017 est.). The main products in agriculture are: arable crops (wheat, corn, barley, sugar beet, sunflower, rapeseed, alfalfa, clover); vegetables (potatoes, cabbage, onion, tomato, pepper); fruits (apples, plum, mandarins, olives), grapes for wine; livestock (cattle, cows, pigs); dairy products. Among the main industries considerable for the economy are: chemicals and plastics, machine tools, fabricated metal, electronics, pig iron and rolled steel products, aluminum, paper, wood products, construction materials, textiles, shipbuilding, petroleum and petroleum refining, food and beverages, tourism. Its exports cover transport equipment, machinery, textiles, chemicals, foodstuffs, fuels. The main import products are: machinery, transport and electrical equipment; chemicals, fuels and lubricants; foodstuffs.
